The Feeding Technology by Kuhner offers a simple way to apply fed-batch cultivation conditions on small scale in microtiter plates, shake flasks, and 50 mL cultivation tubes. No pumps or external enzymes are required. The technology is based on a silicone matrix in which nutrients are embedded. After getting into contact with liquid, a continuous release of nutrients into the medium is initiated which enables the controlled feeding of the cultivated cells or microorganisms.
The Kuhner Feeding Technology makes cultivation conditions in screening more comparable to those on production scale, avoiding overflow metabolism, pH inhibition and oxygen limitation. Thus, the optimal strain for a fed-batch production process can be identified already early on in process development. As a result, costs and time-consuming process adaptions are reduced during later stages of the process development.
Whether using FeedPlates®, FeedBeads®, or FeedTubes®, the flexibility of the product portfolio gives the user a wide range of possibilities. This includes different nutrients (glucose, glycerol, sucrose), different MTP and FeedBead sizes and geometries, and different nutrient release rates (low, standard, high release). If a desired product is not included in the catalogue, custom-made products with special nutrients or release rates can be developed and produced in a standardized procedure. Examples for specific substances in custom-made products include glutamine, pyruvate, and ammonium (for pH stabilization or nitrogen feeding). All products of the Kuhner Feeding Technology are delivered sterile and can easily be used with standard laboratory equipment.
